An Allergy-Friendly Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Usually, when one member of your family has an allergy, the whole family may have to miss out on certain treats that other families get to enjoy. The holidays, whichever you observe, should be a time of gathering with everyone you love, and an allergy shouldn’t prevent anyone from celebrating! Here are some swaps for Cinco de Mayo so good, the entire extended family will love them!

For many of our patients, Cinco de Mayo is a festive celebration filled with food, family and fun! The date, May 5th, is formally observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, and has grown in popularity through recent decades as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

Happily, real Mexican fare offers a myriad of allergy-friendly dishes that are healthy and bursting with mouthwatering goodness! Here’s a delicious selection of fiesta-worthy, just in time for Cinco de Mayo, dishes whether you have allergies or not!

A taco and/or fajita bar is a great way to accommodate nearly every type of diet restriction, and people can create their own meals to their tastes and needs. It’s extremely important to map out the food placement and spacing between dishes to prevent cross-contact during preparation and serving. Clean all utensils and prep dishes with hot, soapy water before being used to prepare allergen-free food. Even a trace of food on a spoon or spatula that is invisible to us can cause an allergic reaction.

Another approach is to create one central dish that everyone can enjoy. One mom created Piñata Rice as an egg, dairy, peanut, tree nut, and gluten-free Mexican rice entree. For a simple bite, try making a spicy cornbread (like this gluten-free version) and serving it grilled with fresh salsa. Additionally tortilla chips and dip can provide easy Latin flavor, but cheesy queso dips and flour-based chips can derail the fun. Try picking up gluten-free tortilla chips, or even make your own!

For those looking to enjoy an adult beverage, we have you covered! While you should think twice before downing a shot of rum or tequila, as they may contain those allergens, you still have plenty of options! With the rise of awareness of gluten allergies, even alcohol brands are making it more apparent about their support and providing a nice range of gluten-free alcohol options.

Of course, one should always consult with a primary care physician or allergist to determine if the consumption of alcohol is acceptable, or if it is contradicts with any prescribed medications. Check out the Urban Taste Bud to view some great options!

*Where should you keep your guard up?*

Mexican food contains a lot sauces and dips, which can vary in their ingredients, so we suggest finding out exactly what is in a sauce or dish before consuming it to ensure you don’t ingest something that will make you ill.

Please make sure to double check your labels before consuming any of the food items above. This list is meant to be a guide and is not considered exhaustive by any means.
