Why choose a Board-Certified Allergist/Immunologist?
July 5, 2016
Many people with untreated allergies aren’t aware of how much better they can feel once their symptoms are properly diagnosed and managed by a board-certified allergist. But beyond just seeking help, it’s important to find the right doctor to oversee your allergy needs. After all, this is your health we’re talking about!
What’s The Difference?
The difference between a Board-Certified Allergist/Immunologist and providers in other specialties is that these doctors are specifically trained to diagnose and treat patients who have asthma, allergies, and immunologic diseases. Because most of these diseases coexist, they must be treated by a provider with expertise in all of these areas of specialty in order to be able to provide the high-quality care necessary to manage these life-long conditions.
To become a certified allergy specialist, a provider must successfully complete an accredited educational program in allergy and immunology. It usually takes at least nine years of training beyond a bachelor’s degree for a provider to become board-certified, including medical school, at least three years residency in pediatrics or internal medicine, then at least two years of specialized training in allergy and immunology. To complete their training, they must pass a certification examination from the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) and regularly attend continuing medical education programs in allergy and immunology.
Specialty certification is a completely voluntary process in the United States, so the providers who dedicate extra years of their lives to the study and practice of their passion are a cut above the rest. The BreatheAmerica Healthcare Delivery Model is built upon the idea that patients struggling with airway disorders can get the care they need at one primary location, instead of bouncing between specialists who only see one snapshot of their condition. For this reason alone, board-certified allergy specialists are the building blocks around which we build our care teams at each location.
